CSA Week 5

Howdy, Misfit Members! It's a rainy Thursday today, but good grief has it been hot this week!! The greens are hating it, but the tomatoes and peppers are loving it! Here's what's in the box this week:

-Lettuce: Red butterhead, Romaine, or Salad Bowl

-Cucumbers (tendergreen and burpless)

-Zucchini and Cocozelle squash

-Yellow Squash

-Delicata Squash

-Broccolini

-Green Beans

Cocozelle squash is basically the same as zucchini, the only difference being a more striped coloring and is slightly more flavorful than regular zucchini (in my opinion anyway!).

Brown Sugar Delicata Squash

Ingredients -3-4 Delicata squash -2 Tbsp olive oil -2 Tbsp maple syrup -2 Tbsp brown sugar -1 Tsp cinnamon (Or less) -Salt & pepper to taste

Directions -Preheat oven to 400. -Halve the delicata squash, remove the seeds, and cut into ½ inch-ish slices. -Line a sheet pan with foil. You may want to spray with cooking spray or coat with butter. -In a bowl mix the olive oil, maple syrup, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt & pepper. -Pour the mixture over the squash and toss gently to coat. -Bake for 20-30 minutes, until squash is slightly browned and tender.

*This is my favorite way to cook delicata squash. Some of you may like a more savory squash flavor, but this particular variety is really more of a sweet taste.

*You may need to adjust the syrup mix slightly depending on what brand of maple syrup you use. In my experience, they all have a slightly different viscosity.

If anyone is interested in a big ol' whopper of a zucchini to make some zucchini bread, let me know and I'll bring one with your basket for next week! I may have forgotten to check the zucchini bushes for a couple days this week and ended up with some baseball-bat sized ones, but they are perfect for bread!

We have somewhere around, from my best estimate, somewhere around 4,000 green tomatoes on the vines. After the hot weather this week, I noticed several turning yellow slightly. I also noticed 2-3 peppers on each pepper plant (bell, jalapeno, poblano, and gypsy). The habaneros are behind the rest, but catching up quickly!

I had to let Stella say hello to everyone this week! For our new members who may not know, Stella is my 900 lb dog. (Or so she thinks, anyway!)

That's all for this week. Hope everyone has a very happy 4th of July weekend! Don't forget to wash your produce!
