CSA Week 18

Well, Misfit Members, we have reached the end of our 2021 season. Here's what's in the box this week:

-Tomatoes: Green or grape & cherry

-Peppers: Bels, banana, gypsy, habanero, poblano

-Sweet Potatoes

-Kale Mix

-Pumpkins and gourds from J & J Pumpkins

-Honey from Troubadour Farms

I wanted to give you all a couple things from other local producers for your last box. I purchased the pumpkins from J & J pumpkins on Dover Rd in Shelbyville. They are two young boys earning money for their college savings, and they are really killing it! They have a Facebook page, which I'll share on the Misfit Farm page for you all to see.

I purchased the honey from my friends over at Troubadour Farms in Smithfield. They also have a Facebook page, so I'll share theirs as well.

Sweet Potato and Kale Fried Rice

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cups wild rice blend + chicken broth to cook it in

  • 1 Tbsp butter

  • 1 1/2 cups cubed sweet potato

  • 2 tsp brown sugar

  • 3-4 cups packed chopped kale

For the vinaigrette:

  • 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

  • 2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar

  • 1 Tbsp maple syrup

  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Prepare rice according to package instructions using broth in place of water. Set aside.

  2. Add ingredients for vinaigrette in a jar with a lid then shake to combine and set aside.

  3. Fill a wok or large skillet with water then bring to a boil. Add a heavy dash of salt and kale then boil until tender, 4-5 minutes. Drain, then when kale is cool enough to handle, squeeze out excess water with hands, crumble, and then set aside.

  4. Turn heat down to medium-high then melt butter in skillet. Add brown sugar and sweet potatoes, season with salt, then saute until tender and caramelized, 8-10 minutes.

  5. Add kale, cooked rice and Maple-Dijon Vinaigrette to the wok then toss to combine.

I want to thank you all for joining me for my first season at the new farm location. While we had a few crop fails (melons and cauliflower), overall we had a successful season. It means so much to me that you all supported our family farm this year, and I hope to see you all again next year!

I have some fun new crops planned for next year, including popcorn, garlic, and even luffas! I've learned a lot about the soil and microclimate of the new location, so next year will be even bigger and better!

Make sure to keep an eye out for blog posts throughout the off season, with farm happening updates and random farm shenanigans. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram too, and watch our progress as we finish moving the farm.

I'm so grateful for you all and hope you enjoyed the season!
