CSA Week 4

Happy Thursday, Misfit members! Here's that's in the box this week:

-Lettuce: Romaine, Red Butterhead, and/or Romaine

-Kale: Curly, Toscano, or Red Russian

-Basil Plant

-Squash: Some combination of-

-Zucchini

-Yellow Squash

-Delicata

-Cucumbers

-Broccolini OR Poblano & Bell Peppers

-Ugly Turnips (Bi-Weekly ONLY)

Last week the weekly members received the Ugly Turnips, so I just had to put a few in for the bi-weekly folks to see these weird things! Like I said last week, though, they taste just fine once you peel the skin. We aim for taste around here, not beauty!

Since almost everyone received kale this week, I wanted to give you my kale chip recipe that I give every year. These are traditionally made with curly kale, but I've tried Toscano kale as well, and while the texture was slightly different, it was just as good!

Kale Chips Ingredients: -Kale -Salt & pepper -Olive oil Directions: -Preheat oven to 325. -Wash your kale thoroughly and pat dry with a paper towel or in a salad spinner. -Remove stems, then chop your kale into uniform-ish bite-sized pieces. Toss in olive oil (just a little, maybe 1-2 tsp) and salt & pepper. -Place in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes. -Remove and let cool for 5-10 minutes. *Seriously, y’all LIGHT on the olive oil. They get super soggy of drenched in it. You can also try some other flavor combinations, such as Ranch, cayenne pepper, or Parmesan cheese. I’ve even tried everything bagel seasoning!

So I have tried to keep up with swapping everyone's dislikes for things they do like each week, so if your basket varies from the list on the blog each week, it's because I've swapped something you listed as "hate" on the survey with something you prefer. I don't always have extra of everything each week, but when I do I am trying to get you your faves! It's a new system for me so bear with me for a couple weeks while I get the hang of it.

Y'all, I am dying to eat some fresh tomatoes!! Just look at these green beauties! I'm hoping with the weather turning hot and humid that we will have some ripening next week, but who knows with the weather these days. We may just have to settle for some green ones to fry up next week!

I also noticed lots of tiny baby strawberries yesterday, which I'm super excited about! I've not had great luck with attempting to grow them in the past, but so far so good at the new farm site!

Have a great week everyone, and don't forget to wash your produce!!
