CSA Week 15

Hey, Misfits! Sorry this is a bit late this week, I've had some things come up that were occupying a good deal of my time. Anyway, here's what's ripe this week:

-Tomatoes: Cherry, Roma, Slicer

-Peppers: Bell, Jalapeno, Banana, Habanero

-Sweet Corn

-Zucchino

-Potatoes: Kennebec, Red Pontiac

-Sweet Potatoes

-Popcorn

-Green Beans

-Yardlong Beans

Sweet Potato Gnocchi

Ingredients:

-1 lb sweet potatoes

-1 cup all-purpose flour

-1 tsp salt

-15 sage leaves

-3 tbsp butter-pepper to taste

Directions:

-After washing the sweet potatoes, prick each with a fork several times. Microwave for 7-10 minutes or until tender.

-Cut each potato in half, scoop out the potato innards and place in a bowl. Mash with a fork while still hot.

-Add the flour and salt and mix.

-Transfer the sough for a cutting board and knead for just a minute or two to make sure the dough is well combined. Don't over-knead and add more flour if needed.

-To shape the gnocchi, cut the dough into fourths, then roll each piece into a long thin rope. Cut the rope into inch-long pieces. If you like ridged gnocchi, you can press a fork into each one.

-In a large skillet, melt the butter. Pan fry a few of the sage leaves for just a minute.

-Cook the gnocchi in a large pot of salted boiling water. They are done when they float to the surface. Scoop the gnocchi out and add to the pan. Fry for two minutes, then serve with freshly ground pepper. You can also add some parm or other cheese of choice.

Well, the reason I'm so late with this this week is mainly due to Misfit Farm's #1 employee, miss Luna. Somehow Luna managed to tear her right ACL, and has partially torn the left. Unfortunately, she also tested positive for Lyme's. (Stick to chewable flea and tick protection, folks, because apparently topicals don't cut it anymore.) She is on a med regimen to rid her of the infection, then we are looking at surgery for her. She's on some pretty good pain meds too, so she's feeling quite a bit better. She's still the best good girl anyone could ever have, and if she has to retire to lazy porch pupper after we get her through her surgery, then that's what she will do. But, for now we will take it one step at a time.

It's a pretty serious situation, but it could be worse. I'm just glad we will be able to help her get better.

I had to show you all this crazy huge sweet potato I pulled earlier this week. That's an average sized sweet potato next to it. It actually would have been a good bit bigger but it seems a mouse beat me to it. What was left of it weighed a little over two pounds!

Well, y'all, I promise next week's blog post won't be this late! Have a good Labor Day weekend and don't forget to wash your produce!
